Scientific Software

The links below will take you to online information about software created for the sciences. Please be aware that some of the software is freely available, some may be free only for student/academic use, and some may be commercial software that must be purchased before use.

BioDraw: produced by CambridgeSoft, this program provides a toolkit for easily drawing biological and biochemical pathways. A free, two-week trial is available for download.

ChemDraw: this software, from CambridgeSoft, is a suite of programs for chemical structure drawing and modeling. A free, two-week trial is available for download.

Forager: developed by Amber Waves Software, this program allows the user to set up foraging behavior simulations using one of 5 different foraging theories.

Geometer’s Sketchpad: a mathematics visualization environment for algebra, calculus, and geometry.

Ghemical: this tool is written for Linux systems, and is an open-source chemical modeling package.

Mathematica®: Mathematica is one of the best known software systems for math-oriented technical work. It provides tools for computation, data modeling, programming and application development, information visualization, and numerous other tasks. Mathematica is a product of Wolfram Research, Inc.

MATLAB®: (from the MATLAB website) “MATLAB is an intuitive language and a technical computing environment. It provides core mathematics and advanced graphical tools for data analysis, visualization, and algorithm and application development. With more than 600 mathematical, statistical, and engineering functions, engineers and scientists rely on the MATLAB environment for their technical computing needs.”

Maple™: another software system for technical data manipulation, visualization, and engineering problem solving.

MDL Chime: this is a browser plug-in from Elsevier that allows the user to model chemical compounds in three dimensions.

TI Connect: the TI Connect software allows you to connect your Texas Instruments calculator to a computer to enhance the calculator’s native capabilities.

TI InterActive!: the TI InterActive software package is an interactive mathematics software suite aimed at student use. It allows for connectivity between Texas Instruments calculators and computers, exports math and scientific documents in HTML format, and has a word processor with integrated math capabilities.
